The city of Winfield will seek a grant to hire two additional police officers.

The board of aldermen voted last week to apply for the grant, which is offered through the U.S. Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services or COPS program. The grant money would cover 75 percent of the expense of hiring two entry-level officers for three years. The city currently has four full-time officers and seven reserve and part-time officers. If they are awarded the grant, the positions would have to remain filled for three years.
