Zerr Files for County Executive

zerrThe former emergency management director for St. Charles County has filed as a Democratic candidate for county executive.

Rodney Zerr, who was laid off in 2010 during a county budget crunch, filed for the post yesterday. Zerr is the only Democrat who filed for the top spot in county government. Incumbent Steve Ehlmann and state representative Doug Funderburk filed on the Republican ticket.

Zerr said he didn’t enter the race out of spite against Ehlmann. When he was laid off, Zerr said, the emergency office he headed was part of the sheriff’s department. He tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he’s “an alternative to career politicians” such as Ehlmann and Funderburk. He said he has a concern with politicians staying in office for extended lengths of time, jumping from one office to another.

Both Ehlmann and Funderburk disputed Zerr’s reference to them being career politicians. Ehlmann said politics has been his third career, having been a teacher and then a lawyer before moving into politics. Funderburk pointed out that he’s been a part-time county and state lawmaker while working full-time as an electrician at Boeing, where he’s worked for more than 30 years.
